Our Arrival in Beijing April 9, 1997 Debbie and I arrived in Beijing on flight 781 yesterday and hired a cab which took us immediately to the visa building of the North Korean Embassy. There was only one man ahead of us. He was a Chinese businessman, based in Hong Kong, who received a visa to look into setting up a tobacco joint venture factory in North Korea. Our visas were issued to us on blue slips of paper clipped into our passports. Our stay is good for 16 days. The official was very friendly, spoke Japanese and waived the $20 visa fee. He thanked us for our humanitarian work for the North Korean people. Last night I met one of the Daewoo executives who is involved in that firm's joint venture garment factory in Nampo, employing over 1,000 North Korean workers. He said they had "the highest work ethic of any people in the world." He is South Korean. He said he will arrange for us to visit his factory when we are in Nampo. Debbie and I will board the Beijing-Pyongyang express at 5:30 P.M. today, arriving in Dandong early tomorrow morning and in Pyongyang at 11:30 A.M. I plan to send another report in two days.
