Tokyo, April 5, 1997

Dear Mr. Yong Ik,

Thank you very much for your message. I will leave for Pyongyang from Tokyo by air on April 8. Any pledges received by April 7 (to be deposited later) or actual money deposited into our Sumitomo bank account(s) by April 12 will be used to purchase additional food, corn at $163 per ton from a trading company in Dandong, China, which will deliver it four days later to Sinuiju. I will be in Sinuiju between April 16 to 20 to pick up such cereals and distribute them directly to the famine population.

Best regards,

Bernard Krisher

Dear Mr. Krisher,

Last few days, I frantically tried to find a fast way to personally help the people of North Korea who are suffering from food shortage. I found couple of telephone numbers in Korea (which did not answer my calls, probably because it's Saturday today) and your internet page.

I am a (south) Korean citizen presently living in Taiwan. I am very much impressed by your devoted activity to help my fellow country people, who are in serious trouble.

Newspaper articles say their situation is already very bad and will get worse rapidly during this month and the next. I hope to contribute to your effort for this critical time. (But I fear I might be a little too late, as I have just found out that you might have already left for North Korea.)

Due to a business trip related to my work, the earliest date I can access a local bank is April 9th (Wed). I probably cannot donate more than US$500.00 this time, but I hope it can be used to ease the life of a few people. I will write you again to find out if the wire to Sumitomo bank was successful.

Best Regards,
